Pause Before the Panic: A Miketz Lesson in Trust and Clarity

Parshat Miketz has a story that has always made me feel unsettled, Paroh dreams a dream, and Yosef interprets it. We’ll get to the dreams in a minute… but first…

Yosef is punished with more time in prison for asking the royal cupbearer to remember him. (I know technically that is last week’s parsha, but stay with me…)

We are taught that we are meant to make reasonable effort on our part, so why is Yosef judged so harshly for doing exactly that?

The commentators explain that the issue was not the request itself.

The issue was that Yosef did not pause long enough to see that the plan was already unfolding.

Salvation was coming.

He just did not stop long enough to recognize it.

Then the parsha shows us something revealing.

Paroh is deeply shaken by his dreams.

His nervous system is completely dysregulated.

He is visibly distressed and unable to think clearly.

At that moment, the royal cupbearer suddenly speaks up and mentions Yosef.

Many commentators explain that he sees Paroh panicking, and that causes his panic.

He thinks that if the king is this unsettled, if something happens to him, if he becomes incapacitated or even dies from all this stress, a new king may not keep him on staff.

He is reacting from fear also.

All of these scenarios point to the same thing.

Everyone is acting in crisis mode, not from clarity.

And here’s the contrast:

Paroh is shown the entire plan. G-d does him a kindness and lays it all out, years of abundance followed by years of famine.

Paroh sees the roadmap, but he cannot understand it.

He needs someone to help him interpret what he is seeing.

Yosef, on the other hand, is not shown the plan in advance.

But Yosef is held to a different standard, because even without seeing it clearly, he should have trusted that there was already a plan in motion.

So to me, the lesson is not “don’t ask for help.” (Which is how I had previously understood these events.)

The lesson is to pause first.

Take a moment to breathe.

Try to see the roadmap, the direction, the journey.

If you can see it, great, continue to have faith that Hashem will bring you salvation.

And if you cannot, then ask for help, not from panic, but from clarity.

When you are clear, you are kind, to yourself and others. Don’t send everyone else into a panic because you are panicked.

Deep breath…

This is why I offer tools that I offer.

I craft the tools I offer as a roadmap, because I see where your struggles are, and I try to design tools with thought and intention.

Not to overwhelm you with options.

Not to create urgency, but to help you pause, steady yourself, and put structure in place so you can see the plan more clearly and move forward without feeling like everything is happening at once.
