EPISODE 157

9 Tips to Stay Warm and Reduce Energy This Winter

Today’s episode is all about tips for heating yourself and keeping your house warmer this winter, without breaking the bank!

Key Takeaways to Tune In For:

  • [00:36] Tip #1: If you have ceiling fans, run them backward.

Doing so helps push the hot air down from any vents, making the space warmer

  • [01:11] Tip #2: Boil a pot of water (or better yet, make some soup!) to heat up the house.

The steam will help warm the room in general, and if you have an open kitchen it can help warm the space better- while giving you something warm to eat or drink!

  • [01:34] Tip #3: Layer up!

Thermal or silk undershirts will help keep you warmer as you sit and work from home.

I personally have started wearing wool socks to help keep my feet warm in the winter, and cool in the summer- and they are fantastic! (See link below.)

  • [02:48] I also think it’s important to wear slippers to help keep you warmer and keep your feet off the cold floor
  • [03:34] Layer up even in your bedding to help you sleep better and not overheat at night.
  • [04:34] Tip #4: Hang winter curtains

These are especially helpful in keeping the cold and light out at night, but make sure to let the sun into your rooms during the day and close the curtains at night.

  • [05:33] Tip #5: Put area rugs on the floors in your living areas
  • [06:07] Tip #6: Heat your bed up by using a hot water bottle (and unmake your bed!)
  • [06:47] Tip #7: Make sure to seal your leaky windows! See the link below for the 3M brand I use.
  • [08:37] Tip #8: if you use heaters, utilize the timer function so you don’t overheat and to save energy.
  • [10:08] Tip #9: Remember that heat rises!

If you have a second level in your house, spend more time in the warmer area of your home.

  • [11:27] Bonus tip: move your body to get your blood flowing and feeling warmer.
