start your zero waste journey

How often do you buy something forget you have it- go out and buy the same thing, AGAIN, and then find the original?

Do you spend a fortune at the grocery store only to throw away food at the end of the week?

Is your closet so packed full you can’t see what is in it and you never have anything to wear?

That used to be me.

I used to have a 900 SQ foot apartment in NYC and it was overfilled with stuff.

I thought I was an organized person.

I was an organized person.  Most of the stuff in my home had someplace to live.

I paid a lot of money for custom closets, I made all our stuff fit.

Yet, we were always cleaning up.

Then in 2012, a few things happened to me.

The first was that I learned about the power of positive thinking and how when I change my mind about things I can live with an abundance mindset and not a scarcity one (Thanks to Chaya Hinda Allen!)

The second was I read the book Zero Waste Home by Bea Johnson.  At first, I thought she was nuts.

Then as I started to incorporate some of her ideas into my lifestyle I realized, my life is so much easier and BETTER!!!

Once I was able to internalize less is more and that I really could live a much better life with less stuff, decluttering was easier.

My family wasted less (food and money) we were happier with the items we had (because we have a carefully curated collection of things) and we had time to spend with each other and do more of the things we loved.

It is a journey, (I would say I am still on the journey) but I am a lot closer to my destination.

What’s the destination?  To get to the point where you are your best self.

I think you can work on this your whole life, BUT – I think you can enjoy the journey as much as reaching the goal.

Here is the thing though, so many people get overwhelmed on the journey because it is so hard!

We are conditioned to buy more and spend more.  That the newest phone or tablet will make our lives better.  This appliance will make us be healthier – this dress will make us look amazing.

In the end, we end up with an appliance graveyard and a closet full of clothing we never wear because we do things on impulse instead of being thoughtful.

It’s time to end the cycle.
