Earlier this week we marked Tu B’Shevat, the New Year for the trees.
Tu B’Shevat reminds us how growth actually works.
You plant a seed.
A tree grows.
And over time, that tree drops seeds and more trees grow.
Nature has structure built in.
Us humans, not so much. We need to create systems and structure to help us grow.
That idea shows up again in this week’s parsha, Yitro.
When you start something, whether it’s a home, a family, or a business, you usually do everything yourself.
In the beginning, that’s necessary.
You’re planting seeds, figuring things out.
You aren’t always thinking about the next steps because the current steps seem like, well… a lot.
That’s exactly what Moshe was doing.
Yitro watches Moshe trying to manage everything himself.
Every question.
Every responsibility.
All day, every day.
And he says something very clear:
This isn’t working.
Not because Moshe failed.
But because growth required a new system.
So Yitro helps Moshe build a system.
He teaches him to delegate, to create layers of responsibility, and to recognize that what started with one person now needs structure to keep growing.
Moshe didn’t lose control he creates a system that makes growth for him and the Jewish people possible.
A system that could be sustained and creates less stress on everyone involved. .
So here’s today’s challenge…
What is one thing you can pass off to someone else and be satisfied that even if they don’t do it as well as you, it will be done and you can take it off your plate?
It may not have been done the way you would do it, but it will be done, and that is good enough!
Pesach works the same way.
What once felt manageable becomes overwhelming when growth isn’t matched with structure.
When everything stays on one person’s shoulders.
When preparation is delayed and everything piles up at once.
Tu B’Shevat teaches us that growth takes time.
Yitro teaches us that growth needs support.
