Take Back Your Joy: How Small Decisions Bring Order in Chaotic Times
As we approach Purim and move deeper into the month of Adar, the current situation in Israel makes it feel hard to do what we’re meant to do in Adar:
Increase our joy.
I think I can speak for most of us here in Israel when I say that among the many emotions we feel right now, joy isn’t at the forefront. Exhaustion is.
It’s hard to feel joy when you’re tired and nothing feels like it’s in your control.
But here’s what I can tell you.
You can take back your joy.
It’s a challenge, for sure, but it’s possible.
Today, as I walked around my house, I decided to take control of the little things that were waiting for me to make a choice.
I put away the necklace I left out from Shabbat, recycled the pants I wasn’t able to mend, cut up the T-shirts we decluttered during Painless Pesach last week and turned them into rags.
I took small things off my to-do list.
The small tasks may sound like nothing, but choosing to get things done instead of waiting for the next siren makes a big impact in our home.
Micro decisions give us back our power.
Clutter is nothing if not a deferred decision, making the small choices is key to moving forward.
It’s true we may have to run to our shelter, but even in the shelter, we can still make change.
Delete emails off your phone. We can’t control everything, but we can control our inbox. That feels like a win.
Clean your camera roll.
Play a game with your kids.
Read a book.
Our shelter has a deck of cards and a book I hope I don’t get to finish while we’re in there.
If you want to know, it’s The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey. Apparently, I decided wartime shelter was the perfect moment to become highly effective.
For those of you who aren’t in Israel, please declutter, because your micro decisions help us too.
When all of the Jewish people are living as the best versions of themselves, we all win.
I’ve seen a lot of comparisons about who’s who in this modern Purim story, everyone trying to fit new characters into an ancient story.
I see how that could be comforting, but we’re writing a new story, and each of us can be the heroine.
Mordechai doesn’t save Esther.
He reminds her that she needs to step into her power and be the heroine she was meant to be.
Her choices don’t only affect her. They affect her people. Even her small actions make a difference because those actions change how she feels and allow her to take ownership of the power her role has.
You’re the CEO of your home, and you’re responsible for all the people and things in it.
Every micro choice you make moves you closer to being the nation G-d expects us to be.
Clutter is a deferred decision, and as the leader in your home, you can’t keep deferring the decisions that shape your space and your family.
You must take action, even though it may feel hard.
You can do hard things, just like Esther did.
Even though the choices may seem small, they have a big impact by reducing what we’re responsible for, and that reduces chaos in our homes.
As we approach Pesach and redemption, we must make the choice to simplify and forge a clear path.
The only way to do this is to clear what’s in your way.
While my team and I are here in Israel, we’re doing our best to help you reach that goal of a Painless Pesach, wherever you are.
If you didn’t join Painless Pesach this year, that opportunity has passed. The participants are already deep in the process.
That said, you aren’t stuck. We can still work together to clear your path.
Tidy Together is where I help you make the micro decisions that move you forward so you become the hero in your own home.
Saying you want accountability is not the same as actually booking a session.
Wishing the choices were already made is easier than doing the work, but if you don’t do the work…
Well you know what happens, it’s the choice you already made.
If you wait until you feel ready, you will miss the opportunity to be the hero of your story.
